Ladies Who Spa!

Last October we purchased my Mum a Spa day for her birthday present. She had never been to a Spa before so we thought it would be a great pampering day for her and a friend to go on.

I looked at all the options that were available and chose The Day Spa Relaxation Day for two. This meant she could take my Auntie, or a friend as she chose fit.

Whittlebury Hall Reception

What I didn’t envisage was Mum immediately inviting me as her plus one. She thought it would be nice for us to have a day out together and so of course I said I would take her.

We eventually managed to organise a convenient date and so I booked us in for the 05th October. I had gifted Mum a treatment as part of her Mother’s Day present, and she requested a hot stone massage as her particular treat.

Now on the run up to the Spa Day I had come down with a horrific cough and cold. It was really causing me problems and I was struggling to sleep at night due to the coughing. It was keeping me up for hours on end, and I was exhausted.

The night before the spa I had not slept much at all, I had approximately three full hours of sleep. I felt like a zombie when Mum arrived at my house at 0730 am. She immediately wanted to cancel the day, but I was optimistic that the sauna and steam room might help with my issues.

We arrived at the beautiful Whittlebury Hall at around 0830 am and immediately checked in at the Day Spa reception. We were given electronic bracelets and welcome packs which outlined what would happen during our day.

Luxury Goodies

Mum was to have her treatment at 230 pm and lunch was due to be served at midday. We headed for the changing rooms to get our swimwear on.

The changing rooms were beautiful. Wooden cabinets, chaise longue, glittery marble showers. It was all very feminine and luxurious. The toilet area was stocked with everything from makeup remover and toner, hand lotions, cotton pads and various other toiletries.

The wooden lockers opened via the electronic bracelet. Inside each locker was a large white towel and a robe which was ours to use for the day. We duly put them on and headed out to the spa area.

As always, the robe had no intention of going around my boobs. It just wouldn’t meet in the middle no matter what I tried.

Big Boob Problems

The first area we came into was the Hydrotherapy pool and the individual steam, sauna and solarium rooms. We hit the pool first. It had huge metal pipes that had different nozzles that sprayed out water at different pressures. The bath itself had several sections with different levels of bubbles. All in all, it was quite fabulous.

After spending an hour or so trying the hydro pool, we pulled our robes on and went to find the swimming pool. Walking through another luxurious changing room we found the huge swimming pool with both an external and internal Jacuzzi.

The pool area was decorated with scenes reminiscent of ancient Greece or Rome. Doric columns and pastoral scenes dominated the room and the external Jacuzzi was framed with actual columns. Around the pool cushioned loungers were readily available.

The Terrace

It was a perfect tranquil spot and we took our place on a lounger and settled in. Mum decided to go and look at the saunas and so I lay there……

Nearly an hour later I woke up! Obviously the lack of sleep from the night before, plus the relaxing atmosphere had really hit me hard.

Swing Time

Deciding to freshen up a little we headed to The Terrace, an informal restaurant and seating area where I ordered a cold drink and Mum had a nice pot of tea.

Mum, relaxing with Earl Grey

It wasn’t too long till lunch so we sat chatting and relaxing even more. Lunch was served and we hopped out of our chairs to see what was on offer.

Now, I was aware it was a buffet lunch, but I didn’t realise how much food would be on offer!

To start there were fresh warm rolls, both normal and glutenfree. A large tureen of Cream of Root Vegetable soup was available and smelled (and tasted) delicious.

Lunch Time

There was a range of cold food available including slices of roast beef, smoked salmon, rollmops, mackerel and broccoli quiche. Bowls of pasta salad, coleslaw, potato salad and more were readily available, along with salad and several dressings. Jacket Potatoes were in a large warming dish, and there was cheese available to go with them.

Even More Food!

On the other side of the buffet there was Roasted Courgette and Red Pepper Lasagne, Smoked Cod and Mussels with Orzo Pasta and fresh Broccoli and finally Piri-Piri Chicken with Stir Fried Vegetables, Wraps and Sour Cream.

For dessert there was a huge silver bowl of fresh fruit salad and also greek yoghurt.

Fresh Fruit Salad

What a feast indeed! After having a small bowl of soup, some cold meat and a piri-piri wrap, I was absolutely stuffed! Mum had eaten her fill too, so we sat for a while, letting lunch go down before heading back to the spa area.

Given up on the dressing gown doing up!

We tried all the different steam rooms, and wallowed in the Jacuzzi for awhile before getting dried off to go up to the treatment area for Mum’s massage.

The relaxation area

I had been told by the staff that there was a “whisper area”  which was a relaxation area that I could go and sit in. I toddled off to find it, and boy was I amazed when I did!

The whisper area had individual heavy voile curtained areas, and behind each set of curtains there were heated water beds! What was even better was the fact that all the beds had soft cotton duvets on them.

Heated Waterbeds…. WITH DUVETS!!!

Well of course I did what any sensible person would do. I snuggled up in the duvet, closed my eyes and had an afternoon nap!

I can honestly say I have never felt so relaxed in all my life. My eyelids got heavier and heavier…..

The sound of Mum’s voice woke me up an hour later. I was warm and comfortable and the waterbed felt like lying on clouds.  Mum climbed into a bed too, and we decided to have 15 minutes chill out time.

Nail Salon

I woke up again, nearly an hour and a half later. Mum was still fast asleep and I felt awful about waking her up but it was 430 pm and we needed to get dressed and start our journey back home.

I can honestly say I really didn’t expect to sleep half the day away. But I am so glad I did, and I felt much more relaxed and refreshed afterwards.

Pamper Time

Whittlebury Hall is a wonderful place to spend the day. I am hoping to go again soon, possibly for one of their twilight spas. I think it would be lovely to spend an evening being pampered, so fingers crossed!
