Cheesier than even Eurovision.

A few months ago I read an article on Time Out’s website. It was all about a new eaterie opening up that sells Cheese. Cheese in many different forms, but basically just cheese.

Called The Cheese Bar, it was an establishment opening in Camden after originally setting up and selling cheesy goodness from a adapted Ice Cream Van. The Cheese Truck plied it’s trade at many festivals and market since 2013 before finally setting up a permanent base at Camden Stables.

I had wanted to try out the restaurant since I had read about it, so on a recent buying trip to London I made the executive decision that we would be giving it a go.

Oranges and Lemons say the bells of St Clements

As it was a sunny day I decided to wear my Pin Up Girl Clothing peasant top and Jenny Skirt. Adding on a Luxulite oranges brooch and a little orange design handbag,  I was ready to hit London Town.

Orange Slice Bag

We arrived on a busy Sunny Sunday lunchtime and it was quite busy. Thankfully there was a space at the bar for the two of us and so we took our seats as the lovely hostess explained the best way to experience the Cheese.

Explaining that most people order two or three dishes (tapas style) to share, they would be brought out at different intervals to the cheese did not go hard and cold.

We had a good look at the menu, which to be fair isn’t massively large. We had a quick discussion on what to try and ended up ordering five different items.

Finally at The Cheese Bar

The Mozzarella Sticks with Marinara, The Fondue with Smoke Sausage, The Young Buck Raclette with Salt Beef and Burnt Leeks, The Short Rib Poutine with Bacon Gravy and finally the Queso Chihuahua, Chorizo and Jalapeno Grilled Cheese Sandwich. A bit of a taster menu.

The first item to arrive was the Mozzarella Sticks with Marinara. I have to say they were simply amazing! Hot and gooey. The Mozzarella formed long strings as we tried to eat them. You get three sticks for the portion and they were pretty filling.

Then the Queso Chihuahua Sandwich arrived. I was still chomping down on the Mozzarella sticks, so the other half dived in before me. He said it was pretty amazing so my attention turned to the sandwich. Asking if it was spicy, he told me “no” and I stupidly believed him.

Queso Chihuahua

The first bite lit my taste buds up and my lips started to tingle. Those jalapenos really were spicy! Even so, I finished the whole lot.

Whilst eating our sandwich, the Fondue with Smoked Sausage arrived. This was simply lovely. A creamy rich fondue with slices of sausage to dip in. This was literally one of my favourite dishes.

Fondue with Smoked Sausage

Then it was the turn of the Young Buck Raclette. This was basically slices of fried potato with salt beef over it, covered with melted cheese, accompanied by burnt leeks. Now don’t get me wrong. It was stunning. Except it is made with a “blue” cheese of which I am not a fan.

Blue Cheese Raclette

Well, I say Not a fan. I literally cannot bloody stand it.

However I have to admit, it was a great dish. The leeks were stunning and so were the potatoes. It was just the cheesy bit I wasn’t keen on. Luckily the hubby absolutely loved it, so he soon polished it off.

The last dish to arrive was the short rib poutine with bacon gravy. This was the dish I was least looking forward to.

The reason being is that I have never tried cheese curds before and they sounded pretty rank.

A large metal bowl arrived with lots of fries inside. On top of the fries was a massive layer of shredded ribs, mixed with gooey stretchy chewy cheese curds. This was all topped with crispy fried onions.

Short Rib Poutine

And it was like heaven on a plate!

I have to say that Cheese Curds are simply divine! Chewy and so tasty. I could have had a second portion of those on their own!

I honestly have to say that it wa probably a toss up between the Poutine and the Mozzarella Sticks as my two favourite dishes. They were simply sublime.

Sadly we were too full to give the dessert a go, but I think we will definitely be going back again so I will leave a little space for the cheesecake.

Adding a pint of pale ale and a 750 ml bottle of sparkling water to the order, the grand total came to £50 with a discretionary 12.5% service charge. We both said it was worth every penny.

We left The Cheese Bar and had quite a long walk down from Camden to Mornington Crescent as we really needed to walk off some of the cheesy goodness!

I was so glad we did, as I saw this amazing piece of street art featuring Chunk from The Goonies; one of my all time favourite films. Well of course I had to have a photograph with it!

Chunk-tastic!!!

All in all, the food was a fantastic experience and I can’t wait to go back and try the other half of the menu.

Till next time
